But all that was threatened when the terrible Blue Meanies declared war and sent in their army led by a menacing Flying Glove to destroy all that was good. Once upon a time… or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called Pepperland – a place where happiness and music reigned supreme. The sympathetic Beatles ride a yellow submarine to the occupied Pepperland, where the Blue Meanies have no chance against the Fab Four’s groovy tunes. ![]() The Lord Mayor of Pepperland (Dick Emery) dispatches sailor Old Fred (Lance Percival) to Liverpool, England, where he is to recruit the help of the Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr). The music-loving inhabitants of Pepperland are under siege by the Blue Meanies, a nasty group of music-hating creatures. Production supervisor John Coates states that many of movie lines were written by poet, performance poet, broadcaster, children's author and playwright, Roger McGough, though he received no credit in the film. From 1944 to 1947 Dunning created many original short films and developed his skills animating articulated, painted, metal cut-outs. The director George Dunning (1920 -1979), a Canadian-born British filmmaker, was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and studied in at the Ontario College of Art, and soon found freelance work as an illustrator. The Yellow Submarine movie exists as pure charm, expressed in fantastical imagery on the Beatles unforgettable music. A wonderfully vibrant and gorgeous cartoon and a treat for the eye and ear. The movie is fictional with stuff you wouldn't find in any other animated movie.
